Re: The Result of Mother's Crack Use on Baby
most street drug addicted babies are underweight, and come with a myriad of health problems from being malnurished in the womb, but the baby will not have a congenital defect. they will however have to quit drugs cold turkey after that cord is cut and any addict will tell you that itself is a living hell. they will shake and cry and scream inconsolably in pain. they may have to be fed with an NG tube because they cannot keep milk in their stomachs. if they are born too early, their lungs won't be ready for air, they'll need surfactent and a ventilator. for some drugs, the babies will need sedatives just to survive this period. what can we do? provide non-judgemental care for addicted pregnant women. help support them in every effort to get drug free! help them leave pimps and husbands who use. give them a safe place to live while they recover and help them regain their lives. if you save one drug addicted woman, how many drug addicted babies will not be born? |

Re: The Result of Mother's Crack Use on Baby
I've worked in a center for babies that are addicted to drugs. Legally you can only take them from the parents for 72 hours, so they go here... and we bundled them up and held them for hours while they screamed. You cannot over stimulate them, you cannot let their hands and feet be free as they will flail around, scratch themselves, hit themselves.. its sad. they do not look messed up they're just bright red and scream every moment they're awake until the drugs are out of their system. the WORST diapers you will ever see as well... its depressing that they start their lives out like that and once they go back to their parents their lives probably wont get much better. |

It is not harlequin. You are thinking of a form of ichthyosis. Due to the disproportioned head, I would venture to guess it is a similar disease, but not the same. It could even be the combination of multiple diseases. A color version of the pic would make it a bit easier to guess what it is exactly. Harlequin ichthyosis looks more like a baby with plate armor on it, and the eyes covered with skin, sever cracking, in general really nasty. It could be a lesser ichthyosis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthyosis |
