Rectal Prolapse and Uterine (Pelvic Organ) Prolapse
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the womb, bladder or bowel bulges into the vagina because the pelvic floor muscles have weakened. Uterine prolapse involves the womb. Symptoms can include feeling or seeing a bulge inside or coming out of the vagina, although some people have no symptoms. The condition is common in women over 50 and more common after menopause. Contributing factors include pregnancy and childbirth, excess weight, long-term constipation, persistent coughing and pelvic surgery. Treatment may include pelvic floor muscle training, a vaginal support pessary, hormone treatment or surgery in severe cases. Treatment may not be needed when there are no symptoms. Rectal prolapse is a separate condition in which bowel protrudes through the anus rather than into the vagina. |
