Rectal Prolapse: Anal Prolapse
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which rectal tissue protrudes through the anus. Full-thickness prolapse involves the entire rectal wall, while mucosal prolapse involves only the lining. Full-thickness prolapse has concentric folds; prolapsing hemorrhoids form columns separated by grooves. Rectal prolapse affects fewer than 0.5% of the population, is more common in women, and becomes more frequent with age. Constipation and straining likely contribute. Bleeding and pain can occur, and surgery is the main treatment. A swollen prolapse that becomes trapped outside the body and cannot be pushed back is a surgical emergency. |
