The Real Reason People Tan Excessively?
I found this in a list of other common obsessions such as nail biting, hair pulling and skin picking, which some of us have discussed recently in other threads. There is a story on here about an overweight young woman who was thought to have died from a melatonin injection, but, it was related to her weight. I thought I'd post this for opinions. I never thought of this one. Obsessive Tanning Everyone knows by this point that excessive tanning is extremely dangerous. Yet people still do it, turning their skin into a leathery hide and greatly increasing the risk of deadly cancer. When researchers started studying people who obsessively tanned, they assumed the impulse was to cover up some perceived defect. But Sack says what they found was surprisingly different: They’re basically getting high. Part of the chemical reaction to UV light that causes tanning also releases hormones that control stress and produce endorphins. Tanning for these people produces a rush. Take it away and they go through withdrawal. “When forced to go cold turkey, they go through the same symptoms as getting off opiates,” says Sack. “They see no reason to stop because they’re enjoying it. They think the world is trying to interfere with their pleasure. Their behavior is addict behavior.” ~Courtesy of msn~ |

No kidding... That's fascinating stuff. Makes me think of compulsive 'cutters' who self harm for the adrenaline rather than depression. People going through major detox do stuff like that too, it distracts from the major withdrawal symptoms without even fully realizing why they do it. |

Re: The Real Reason People Tan Excessively?
I was an obsessive tweezer of my legs. The new hairs drove me crazy and I was late for work all the time. I don't have much body hair naturally and what I have is light in color, but, it annoys me and realistically, no one can probably see it. I did feel better afterwards though. |
