With the recent, gruesome stories of an alleged face-eating man, heart-eating man and body-part-mailing man gaining attention, even the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been forced to weigh in to assure people that a, "zombie apocalypse", is not in fact happening, (See what the CDC said below).

But a very real, and very deadly disease does exist, spread by the tsetse fly, called African trypanosomiasis, or "sleeping sickness," and some scientists say that it turns people to "zombies", (watch two short documentaries on the disease below text).

What is the real zombie disease? It's called Human African trypanosomiasis.

Signs and symptoms according to wikipedia, "African trypanosomiasis symptoms occur in two stages.

The first stage is known as the haemolymphatic phase and is characterized by fever, headaches, joint pains, and itching. Invasion of the circulatory and lymphatic system by the parasites is associated with severe swelling of lymph nodes, often to tremendous sizes. Winterbottom's sign, the tell-tale swollen lymph nodes along the back of the neck, may appear. If left untreated, the disease overcomes the host's defenses and can cause more extensive damage, broadening symptoms to include anemia, endocrine, cardiac, and kidney dysfunctions.

The second stage, called the neurological phase, begins when the parasite invades the central nervous system by passing through the blood–brain barrier. The term 'sleeping sickness' comes from the symptoms of the neurological phase. The symptoms include confusion, reduced coordination, and disruption of the sleep cycle, with bouts of fatigue punctuated with manic periods leading to daytime slumber and night-time insomnia.[citation needed] Without treatment, the disease is invariably fatal, with progressive mental deterioration leading to coma and death. Damage caused in the neurological phase is irreversible. Tryptophol is a chemical compound that induces sleep in humans. It is produced by the trypanosomal parasite in sleeping sickness.

Is a Zombie apocalypse appearing in America? Not so says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Spokesperson David Daigle told the Huffington Post, "CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms)."

There have been a number of outrageous "zombie" linked stories coming out in the last few days. First there was the story in Florida of a naked man eating 80 percent of a homeless man's face. His girlfriend claimed that she believed it was the work of Voodoo, authorities believe it is related to the now popular drug "bath salts".

In Hackensack, New Jersey a story came out that a man cut out his own intestines and threw them at Police officers.

In Florida, schools report that rashes from a mysterious origin are appearing on kids.

There also have been several stories related to flesh eating bacteria appearing on people. Most notably, a South Carolina mom this week.

Scientists have been warning of a new type of HIV/AIDS invading North America called Chagas Disease. Screening may help combat Chagas disease; The new HIV/AIDS of the Americas? A screening strategy could make the diagnosis and treatment of Chagas disease -- a single-cell parasite -- more feasible, a U.S. researcher said.

The study, published in the journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, demonstrated a screening strategy potentially could be much more efficient, cost-effective and viable than current disease control programs focusing on insecticide spraying.

Michael Levy of Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, both in Atlanta, and colleagues said Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasites that cause Chagas disease, are carried by triatomine bugs that infest houses in poor communities.

The researchers performed a serological survey in children 2 to 18 years old living in Arequipa, Peru, where a vector control -- insecticide spraying -- campaign currently is disrupting transmission of T. cruzi and 5.3 percent of children had already been infected.

The researchers then related their findings to data that had been collected during the vector control campaign -- entomological, spatial and census data -- and found that using the data they could target diagnostic testing that would identify more than 83 percent of the infected children by testing 22 percent of eligible children.

Despite all the wacky occurrences, the internet is taking this more as a humorous conclusion than a realistic one.
