lipo gone wrong A 41-year-old woman underwent cosmetic liposuction. During the procedure her bowel was perforated a number of times and she was left with intestinal failure and a laparostomy. Fig. a shows an abdominal hernia as a result of the dehiscence. In Fig. b, porcine dermal collagen was used to repair the integrity of the abdominal wall and return the recti to the midline. It was used to reconstruct the posterior wall along with component separation1 and Fleur-de-Lys abdominoplasty. This case highlights how cosmetic procedures such as liposuction can have serious consequences.  · |

A 38-year-old man had a severe gunshot injury that required thoracotomy and laparotomy for liver laceration. He presented with chronic symptoms of obstruction and at laparotomy there was an intra-luminal object in the mid ileum. This proved to be a large surgical sponge. Various hypotheses have been formed to explain exactly how the presumed transvisceral migration of such a foreign body might occur without causing any particular parietal alteration. It has suggested that the presence of gauze causes an inflammatory reaction surrounded by a subsequent abscess, followed by intestinal perforation and sponge migration into the lumen of the small bowel.

The burns on the back of this 22-year-old woman were caused by being hit by lightning (1). She was walking in an open mango orchard on a cloudy afternoon when she was struck by lightning. She survived, but developed thermal burns to her back and leg.  |
