There are few grossly visible features of drowning. A frothy fluid may exude from mouth and nose. Prolonged immersion may produce skin wrinkling. Seen here are bilateral petrous ridge of temporal bone hemorrhages that may occur in association with drowning. Drowning is defined as respiratory impairment from submersion in a liquid medium. This may range from submersion of the entire body to just submersion of the pharynx

Thermal burn injuries occur with a hot local environment. The burned skin seen here over the torso and head of a child occurred from a fire. The treatment and prognosis depend to a great extent upon the extent of the burn injury -- the total body surface area (TBSA) involved. Other factors include age of the patient, underlying diseases, and the presence of an "inhalation injury" from breathing in hot gases, which typically occurs with fires in an enclosed space such as a building

This spleen shows a miliary pattern of granulomatous inflammation, with numerous small tan granulomas. This suggests a poor immune response. This patient had AIDS

The milky white fluid shown here within the peritoneal cavity represents a chylous ascites. This is an uncommon form of fluid accumulation that can be due to blockage of lymphatic drainage, in this case by a malignant lymphoma involving the mesentery and retroperitoneum

Collection of fluid in a space is a transudate. If this fluid is protein-rich or has many cells then it becomes an exudate. The large amount of fibrin in such fluid can form a fibrinous exudate on body cavity surfaces. Here, the pericardial cavity has been opened to reveal a fibrinous pericarditis with strands of stringy pale fibrin between visceral and parietal pericardium.

This is sirenomelia. The term comes from "siren" or "mermaid" because of the characteristic fusion of the lower extremities that results from a failure in the development of a normal vascular supply to lower extremities from the lower aorta in utero.

Here is a ventral abdominal wall defect. This defect involves the region of the umbilical cord, so this is an omphalocele. Note that there is a thin membrane covering the herniated abdominal contents (loops of bowel can be seen under the membrane). This defect would have to be repaired over a period of time. Since the bowel has mainly developed outside of the abdominal cavity, it is malrotated and the cavity is not properly formed (too small).

This is hydranencephaly. The brain is essentially a bag of water, because an intrauterine vascular accident involving the brain led to lack of blood flow and subsequent loss of cerebral tissue.
