Popping my first thread cherry with photos of one of my rabbits and her leg abscess.


Anyway, had an emergency in November for Comet when she had somehow ripped her leg wide open to the point she looked skinned. The cats didn't do it, her companion didn't do it, so all we figured was she was being stubborn (as she is) and attempted to fit through an teeny tiny opening in their gate (which has been promptly fixed).

My mother picked her up from the vet after she was done with surgery and thus the fun began.

Her leg was wrapped and stapled closed along with a tiny belly opening cleaned and stapled. Staples were used instead stitches as Comet was determined to make every far more difficult than it should be.

The next week, we headed back for a check up and her leg was checked over and rewrapped. Her belly was healing very well while her leg was another story. It wasn't long until the staples were removed from her belly and we learned how to wrap, clean, and bandage her leg as an abscess had formed.

Between working, staying up to make sure she was behaving, medicating her, cleaning her leg and keeping her comfortable, the abscess was very gradually shrinking with only a touch of dead skin the vet removed during the fourth vet visit.

It looks real nasty in the pics, but it never smelled and was gradually getting better. The very last photo was the last one we managed to take before we stopped wrapping it and allowing air and sunlight to help with the healing process as she had stopped picking at it. We continued to place ointment on it twice a day and was looking better every single day.

Vet had informed us all of the fur may never come back because of where it is and how it was healing. Thankfully, once I reintroduced her back with her companion, all of the fur grew back and she's back to her old antics of causing trouble and then looking innocent when busted. Her companion was more than happy to have company, too. Poor dude was very lonely without his better half.

Thanks to the wonderful vet, the entire medical circus cost me a little over $300, a chance to actually sleep through the night for the first time in weeks and a completely healthy three year old rabbit.

I love my girl. She sure wasn't happy with all of the man handling and car rides, but she feels ten times better than having her leg ripped open like something was trying to skin her. Still don't know how the fuck she did it, but we haven't had any other incident since, thankfully.

Pets are awesome, I like my Blue Heeler Fido more than the humans I know. Good for you for taking care of your bunny. I had one when I was a kid named Bugsy. It loved cuddling on the couch while we watched Looney Tunes.
