Ptosis (Eyelid Drooping) Video & Pics

Ptosis is a drooping or falling of the upper eyelid. The drooping may be worse after being awake longer, when the individual's muscles are tired. This condition is sometimes called "lazy eye", but that term normally refers to amblyopia. If severe enough and left untreated, the drooping eyelid can cause other conditions, such as amblyopia or astigmatism. This is why it is especially important for this disorder to be treated in children at a young age, before it can interfere with vision development. The term is from Greek πτῶσις "a fall, falling".

I had surgery done twice to correct this. Honestly, the worst part was being awake for the surgery and the pain blocker not working very well.

The first set of pics are from the first surgery. There was a complication, caused by an allergic reaction to the eye cream. It caused blisters on the suture sites and increased swelling of the eyelids. Plus, the stitches on the right eye popped, before the surgeon even got out of the operating room.

The photos are in chronological order, over a two week time period.

Re: Ptosis (Eyelid Drooping) Video & Pics

Within a few minutes of getting the stitches removed, the incision came open on the right side. I went back and had the section restitched. Unfortunately, later that night, both sides came completely open and the surgeon had to put the stitches back in. I was in stitches for 14 days and had to be put on antibiotics to keep down any infection.

Re: Ptosis (Eyelid Drooping) Video & Pics

A few months later, my right eyelid fell and the ptosis was nearly as bad as before the first surgery. So, the dr decided to try another surgery. The second surgery was a lot smoother and didn't have any complications. The surgeon attempted to correct the scarring that was caused by the wound reopening after the first surgery. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and I now have a permanent dimple by my eye.

The surgeon was able to better correct the ptosis, but he was not able to fully correct it. He said that I am part of the 10% who have difficulties with the procedure. On the upside though, my vision is much better and my eyelashes no longer block my view.

Re: Ptosis (Eyelid Drooping) Video & Pics

Interesting.

How awful to have to be awake while people are performing surgery on your face.

Does this mean it's a problem with the eyelid muscles, or an overgrowth of skin above the lid area?

It's an issue with the muscles and tendons. During the surgery, they shorten both up and remove some of the skin on the eyelids. And with the first surgery, the dr put stitches in the eyebrow muscles, to pull them up, as they were dropping as well, from years of straining to see.

I had to use frozen peas in a bag and a heating pad to keep from rubbing, especially after a few days. The first time was the worst, because of the allergic reaction to the cream they gave me.

Re: Ptosis (Eyelid Drooping) Video & Pics

Nope.. I'd be blind... Better you than me...

Can't deal with anything pointy near/at my eyes.. maybe if they'd knock you (or in this case, me) out for it.. I'd be jumping all over the place, cringing at the thought now..

As for stitches popping, luckily that happened while you were there and under supervision. (and during the removal/popping)
They don't like to re-suture wounds, leave them to heal from the inside out. (Like my elbow and my appendix surgery.)
