Prune Belly Syndrome: Eagle-Barrett Syndrome
Prune belly syndrome, also called Eagle-Barrett syndrome, is a rare condition present at birth characterized by partial or complete absence of the abdominal muscles, urinary tract malformations and, in males, two undescended testes. It affects mostly males, although female cases also occur. Its exact cause is unknown. Associated problems can include musculoskeletal and cardiovascular abnormalities, underdeveloped lungs and chronic kidney failure. Treatment depends on severity and may include surgery to create an opening for bladder drainage, move the testes into the scrotum, reconstruct the bladder or widen the urethra. A kidney transplant is rarely needed. |
