It's a graft.

They keep the skin attached from the donor area, which keeps the graft alive.
The blood vessels from the donor area allows the thumb to heal with the new skin over it and not turn black and die.

Later they will detach the thumb from his thigh.

It was invented as the first real plastic surgery after WW1.

Well it reminds me of the "Grey's Anatomy" Episode I saw few days ago. There was a Black men who lost his arm in an accident.
They couldn't reattach (I hope the word is right. Well I trust good old aunt Google. ) the arm first (because there was somethingsore or so) and then they put his arm on his stomach to keep it "alive".

I think it's the same concept, isn't it?

Well I know it has been explained before but for me (and I think all other people whose mothertongue isn't english. ) my explanation was easier to understand.
