Phthisis Bulbi - Shrunken Eyes
This is my first real post, so I hope I’m doing this right. I hope you find it interesting like I did. I recently learned about phthisis bulbi, also known as “shrunken eyes”. It’s characterized by loss of vision, eye function, and either protrusion or shrinkage of the affected eye. There are various causes, most commonly being severe trauma, necrotic tumors, cancer, infection, and inflammation. There are no cures for the condition, instead symptom relief and cosmetic treatment are recommended. Although it is an end-stage disease, it ranges in severity. Here are some photos I found of severe cases and their causes. No history of trauma. Painless. Diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer. ![]() Fig 5) Affected eye after removal (from the same woman as above) showing necrotic tissue. |
