Photos of Subcutaneous Emphysema

Subcutaneous emphysema is the presence of air between the skin and the underlying tissues. It's most often caused by some sort of rupture in the respiratory tract that creates communication between the respiratory system and the subcutaneous tissue. Changes in pressure caused by inhalation/exhalation force the air into the tissue, and then seal off the rupture (preventing the air from escaping back out) when the pressure is decreased. (Similar to a condition called tension pneumothorax, but with the skin instead of the chest cavity.)

These radiographs are from a dog with severe subQ emphysema, a life threatening condition. You can see how far his skin is stretched away from his bones/muscles. He is blown up like a balloon.

no animal cruelty videos, torturing of animals, things of that sort. this is a medical condition of the animal so it's ok... :)

Re: Photos of Subcutaneous Emphysema

I had this after a thoroscopic sympathectomy and a subsequent collapsed lung - it fucking hurt! I refused a chest tube (helped put them in way too many times) and was terrified of that procedure. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I had a spontaneous pneumothorax in 2013 and they inserted a chest tube. It really wasnt all that bad. Youre numb during the procedure, and although still awake, dont look at the procedure being done to you and all will be well. The worst part of this whole ordeal is being stuck in bed with a tube hanging out of your chest for a week

How did they treat it without a chest tube? Yeah I saw videos of chest tube procedures and apparently it's one of the most painful procedures you can have.
