A lot of genetic conditions are carried on the X chromosome, which means they either only affect males or affect males more severely. A boy only has one X chromosome, so if it carries a bad gene, he is screwed. A girl has two X chromosomes, so the normal one can protect her from the negative effects of the bad one. This is why conditions like hemophilia almost always affect boys.

It's probably the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, PA. It was part of a medical school, but, people may visit it. They have old medical equipment as well, including a room of too many things to display.
