Photojournalist Hit in the Head by a Tear Gas Canister During Protest Gathering

Pablo Grillo, the 35-year-old photojournalist who was seriously injured after being hit in the head with a tear gas canister during the retirees' march in front of Congress, underwent further surgery for a brain hematoma. His condition is critical and is being kept strictly confidential.

"Back in 2016, Pablo Grillo broke up with his girlfriend, with whom he was living. Then he decided he needed a change of scenery and went on a trip to Mexico. I gave him one of my cameras, a D90, and that's where it all began," Pablo's dad recalls.

"He started making a living taking photos on the beach, especially of the Yankees who were getting married. Then, little by little, he was able to save up and equip himself. He bought a drone. A film production company saw his work and hired him as a director of photography for a feature film."

"The job went so well that they offered him continued employment, but he decided to return to Argentina. He was there for about a year," explains the proud father of this 35-year-old young man, who is now fighting for his life.

"When he returned, he was very clear about what he wanted to do. He enrolled in the ARGRA (Association of Graphic Reporters of the Argentine Republic) course and completed it without problems. There, in addition to improving as a photographer, he learned to write and analyze texts; he really took off," he says.

Fabián, a trained critic, likes Pablo's work. "He has a very good eye. He has a three-dimensional eye, something that isn't very common.

It probably comes from his training in industrial design (Pablo studied that degree at the National University of Lanús). Pablo's work is rarely seen on social media.

He doesn't like to post much there; on the contrary, he's quite critical of the whole phenomenon and its consequences."

Far from the official rhetoric that attempts to associate him with a hooligan or criminal, Pablo is a much-loved kid, as evidenced by the large turnout of residents of his Remedios de Escalada neighborhood, who filled the plaza with their demand for justice.

It was Thursday the 13th, the day after the brutal attack. A crowd of neighbors, retirees, and students gathered there, carrying handwritten signs reading "Bullrich, murderer, resign." They also banged pots and pans, accompanied by car horns.

The following day, Friday the 14th, Pablo's colleagues, through their respective union representatives, SiPreBA, ARGRA, and Fatpren, held a protest in front of Congress. The main slogan was not very different: "Out, out, out, Bullrich, out."

Sad story about him. Adrenaline junky journalist. He had a good eye. He’ll never be the same if he comes out of his coma.
