Re: Photographer Committs Suicide After Horrific Photo
Here's something that bothers me-all of you people condemning this guy for 'not doing anything.' Well he did do something. He showed us the fate thousands of children meet every fucking day. What the fuck are you doing about it? Sitting at your computer bitching about how heartless he was. Your a hypocrite if that's your feeling. Get up from your computer, get on a plane and go stop this from happening! Everybody saying how they'd 'carry this child to food no matter how far, diseases be damned!' let's see you go do it. Still reading this? Not planning to go to Africa? Then you have no right to judge him. Period. It was already pointed out that the mother came back for her child. The kid was lucky in that regard. Many, many more aren't. Besides, how exactly is saving that one particular child going to change things one iota? It doesn't. You save that child, it grows up to have children of its own who in turn starve to death in a field to be eaten by carrion birds. In the end nothing changes and the blood is on all of our hands. That's why he offed himself. That reality is a little too much for people to handle, especially when you've seen it first hand. |

Re: Photographer Committs Suicide After Horrific Photo
my sentiments exactly. the guy was just showing our lazy asses what's happening out in the world. like cronkite, dan rather, brian williams, and even tom savini has done for over 60 years. they all were just showing how bad things get over there. 99% of the people that have said, (in this thread) that they would carry that child to food, or what have you, no matter if the kid was diseased or not. are lying. i mean, if i had the money for a plane ticket, i would fly there and help as much as i could, for as long as i could before the shit would get too heart breaking for me. but like some of you have said in previous comments, i've got my own problems to worry about. i hold kevin carter in high regards, because unlike ALL of the people that have called him names, and said he was a bad person, wouldn't have gone to do what kevin had done. to open our eyes to what is going on in this world. |

Re: Photographer Committs Suicide After Horrific Photo
ye that child in second pic maybe actually is about 5, or even 6-7 years old makes them just too tiny for their ages but still that kid is a 'lucky one', so sad i mean it is 2011 folks are fatter then a car/house(?) and others are starving just eating sand, this is madness! (not mental illness!)

Re: Photographer Committs Suicide After Horrific Photo
You have to know what you're doing to feed the famished without killing them. Their bodies are too frail to handle solids. They need to be weaned like a toddler. This child is probably a lot older than you think. Definitely past the "baby" stage. Granted committing suicide was stupid of him, but he brought awareness to the world.

Re: Photographer Committs Suicide After Horrific Photo
It's not the responsibility of a photo journalist to interfere with the environment they are documenting. Period. Serious photo journalists understand their unique duty as being vehicles for a camera lens without manipulating situations, as challenging as they are to one's morality. It can be a difficult concept to comprehend but sometimes to forgo ingrained "moral duties" serves to achieve higher humanitarian reward. I highly doubt this man exposed himself to this degree of horror and danger with the intentions of making some huge profit or recognition. And to trivialize his defense...you have to imagine the volume of tragedy he encountered there daily, there would be no documentation if he satisfied every moral obligation that arose in an environment as desperate and devastated as that. As far as his suicide...suicide in general..how can anyone be so self-righteous and think they have such supreme, unbound knowledge regarding ANYONE'S own personal reality? He could have been experiencing the most unimaginable, crippling mental anguish "un"imaginable...You JUST DONT KNOW
