Perichondritis: Pictures of Infected Ear Piercings and Earlobe Keloids
Auricular perichondritis is an infection around the cartilage of the outer ear that can develop after a cartilage piercing. Earlobe keloids are a different piercing complication: an overgrowth of scar tissue, not an infection. One study found that up to 35% of people with pierced ears experienced at least one complication. Cartilage piercings can develop more serious infections because ear cartilage has no blood supply of its own. Symptoms include painful swelling, warmth and redness, often sparing the earlobe. Organisms involved include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Treatment includes antibiotics, and an abscess often requires incision and drainage. Once an abscess forms, preserving the ear's shape can be difficult. The earlobe is a common site for keloids; treatments include excision, steroid injections, cryosurgery, pressure, radiation and laser therapy. |

Re: Perichondritis: Pictures of Infected Ear Piercings and Earlobe Keloids
I still clean my ears and earrings before putting them in and I've had them for a few decades. I'm guessing it was uncleanliness or an allergy to the earrings. I have a nickel allergy, which cheaper jewelers mix in with gold. They itch and I have to take them out, but, I'd never let them get to this point.
