Penoscrotal Lymphedema: Man With Elephantiasis Balls
Penoscrotal lymphedema, also called scrotal elephantiasis, is a rare condition involving enlargement of the scrotum and sometimes the penis. It can be congenital or acquired. Filariasis is the most common acquired cause worldwide; other causes include radiation, tumors and granulomatous disease. Once fibrosis develops, treatment involves surgical removal of affected tissue and reconstruction. Potential complications include bleeding, urethral injury, hematoma, infection and recurrence. One reported case involved removal of 32 kilograms of tissue from a 54-year-old man in India after eight years of swelling. |
