Those are experimental finger gills.

Like the gills on fish.

It is hoped that divers will one day be able to 'breathe' through their finger gills (while retaining their fully functional lungs) and be able to remain submerged for long periods without cumbersome and restrictive diving equipment.

Research is being funded by a Consortium from the Crabbing and Petroleum Exploration industries.

Early results are said to be promising.
