Wow. The wound margins are healthy, his breathing seems strong and regular, and he also has a gigantic gaping hole in his chest. Judging from the lacerations on the sternum and the obvious softness of the bone, best guess is he had open-heart surgery, and post-op complications have infected and softened the bone, tearing out the staples usually used in that context. The bone is too soft to attempt reclosure, so surgeons have maintained the health of the wound in its open state. He will possibly have a plate placed over the top, outside the body, once the wound has healed completely and the necrotic sternum removed (no idea why it'd be outside but if they were going to use one inside the body it'd be there already). Only speculation but it fits what we see here. |
