Chrysomya bezziana is the latin name for the Old World screw-worm, or screw fly. Their larvae (screw-worm) eat both necrotic and living tissue, quite unusual amongst carrion-feeding insects. They are most definitely NOT something you want to have. Quite different from the specimens used in "maggot therapy", these will devour healthy, living tissue as well as necrotized matter. Not good.  |
