Noma Disease Photos, Noma Disease Pictures: Cancrum Oris, Gangrenous Stomatitis
Noma is a rapidly progressing gangrenous disease of the mouth and face that mainly affects children aged 2 to 6 and can also affect adults with weakened immune systems. Most cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa's "noma belt," stretching from Mauritania to Ethiopia, although cases have been reported on other continents. Also called cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis, noma begins as a soft-tissue sore on the gums and can spread to facial skin and bone. Treatment at the gum-sore stage can allow healing without lasting damage. Early treatment includes antibiotics, oral hygiene and nutritional support. Survivors of advanced disease may have difficulty eating, speaking, breathing or seeing and require reconstructive surgery. |

I totally agree. You want to know something even sicker than this disease? Dr Joseph Mengele, the Angle of Death in the Nazi Death Camps, studied this disease to find a cause and a cure. Now that's twisted. |
