Nine Stone Tumor Removed from Mexican Woman

A WOMAN who ballooned to almost 20stone discovered that a 9st4oz tumor was behind her dramatic weight gain. Mercedes Talamante, 51, was completely unaware that she was ill and thought it was just a natural weight gain that came from being older. But she finally decided to see a doctor on the insistence of her daughter Maria who was convinced that she was sick. Medics in Mexico told her that her symptoms were actually down to the massive growth - since confirmed as the world's largest - that had developed around her ovaries. Moises Aaron Nunez, the director of the General Hospital of Zone 26 in Cabo San Lucas, a city in north-western Mexico, said it had been a tough case as it was almost without precedent. He said: "We could not find any example of an ovarian tumor this big.”There was no precedent anywhere in the world." In hospital, medics had identified the huge tumor and Dr. Gilberto Inzulza who led the team operating on Mercedes said it had taken four hours to successfully remove it from the woman's body. Doctor Inzulza, who is the chief surgeon at the public hospital in Cabo San Lucas, said the operation had been carried out last month but it was kept secret until it was clear the woman had successfully recovered and was ready to go home. At a joint press conference together with the doctor she thanked him for giving her a new life and added: "I feel like a new woman.”In fact after the surgery when I took my first steps, I felt like I was walking on air." And she added that the first thing she planned to do when she got home was to go out with her daughter whose good advice had saved her life.
