Newborn With Severe Craniofacial Malformation
Craniofacial clefts are rare congenital malformations affecting the face, with a wide range of severity. Their reported frequency ranges from 1.4 to 6.0 per 100,000 live births. The Tessier classification numbers clefts from 0 to 14 using the eye socket as a reference point. The exact cause is unknown. Genetic and environmental factors may disrupt facial development during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Treatment usually involves surgery in several stages, including tissue repositioning and bone grafting, coordinated by a team that includes plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists. |

Re: Newborn With Severe Craniofacial Malformation
A lot of times children like this won't live long, anyway. Have to wonder about chemical exposure sometimes, whether environmental or drugs. And sometimes, it's just a genetic screwup. I guess if no babies were born this way, we would not appreciate healthy ones. If you never felt sorrow, you cannot appreciate contentment. One day, on a different plane of existence, perhaps it will all make sense.
