Newborn Baby Infected With The Herpes Simplex Virus
Neonatal herpes is a herpes simplex virus infection affecting newborn babies. About 85% of infections are acquired during delivery. The disease has three main forms: infection involving the skin, eyes and mouth, accounting for about 45% of cases; central nervous system disease, about 30%; and disseminated disease, about 25%.

About 20% of newborns with neonatal herpes have no skin lesions. The infection can be life-threatening, and untreated disseminated disease has a mortality rate of about 85%.
