Neurofibromatosis and Facial Tumours: Chantal Sebire and Huang Chuncai
Chantal Sebire, a 52-year-old French woman with an incurable tumour that disfigured her face, lost a court bid for euthanasia in March 2008. She was found dead at her home in Plombieres, France, on March 19, 2008, after taking a fatal dose of barbiturate. The Dijon prosecutor later closed the investigation without charges. Huang Chuncai, from Hunan, China, was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. Aged 32 in January 2008, he had about 50 pounds of tumour tissue. His largest tumour, weighing about 33 pounds, was removed in July 2007, followed by a second operation in January 2008. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a genetic condition that causes changes in skin colouring and tumours along nerves. It results from mutations in the NF1 gene and affects about 1 in 3,000 to 4,000 people worldwide. About half of cases are inherited; the rest arise from new mutations. |

The woman in the second picture killed herself. She was french, and asked the president personally for permission to have assisted suicide by an injection, but when it was denied, she hung herself, I believe. Sad, but common story really |
