It's a recessive genetic condition. Fewer than 50 cases have ever been reported. I found two case reports where parents were first cousins; each of these cases involved three siblings with the syndrome. In most of the other cases the parents were not related. Both parents have to be carrying a defective version of the same gene, but because the condition is so rare the gene responsible doesn't seem to have been pinpointed.

These babies look like the offspring of the cartoon character "Ziggy" and a blow-up sex doll. In any case, it's an unfortunate disorder, but then again, lethal birth defects and stillbirths, both characteristic of Neu-Laxova Syndrome, seem to be two of Nature's ways to keep population in check, as some people said before I got here. |
