Optic apex syndrome, neuropathy and ophthamalgia don't explain his orbit (eye socket), zygomatic arch (cheekbone) and maxilla (upper jaw) rotting away like that. Probably a history of uncontrolled diabetes.

I agree that the diagnosis really doesn't account for that rotting. I was thinking cancer, but with rampant diabetes, anything is possible
