Re: Necrotizing Fascilitis
I'm not being a smart-ass, but it is **fasciitis**, without the "L" in it. There are many ways of contracting it, from a "bug" in swimming water, as already mentioned, or simply nicking yourself without a slightly rusty shaving razor. It is more prevalent in patients with suppressed immune systems (e.g. cancer, diabetes, chronic conditions, smokers, IV drug users, etc.), but anyone can contract it. The most recognizable form to the layperson is the strain contracted when bitten by the brown recluse spider, which lives in abundance here in Florida, unfortunately, and other southern U.S. states. We usually had 1-3 cases a month at my last hospital. Suprisingly, people around here knew what to look for when they were bitten and came to the E.R. fairly promptly, lessening the need for limb amputation or deep debridement (cutting away dead skin). Thanks for the post.
