Necrotizing Fasciitis: Flesh-Eating Disease, Debridement and Skin Grafts
Necrotizing fasciitis, also called flesh-eating disease, is a rare, life-threatening infection of the deeper layers of the skin. Many bacteria can cause it, with group A Streptococcus believed to be the most common. Bacteria can enter through cuts, burns, insect bites, surgery or drug injection. The infection can also follow blunt trauma that does not break the skin. Risk factors include diabetes, cancer, cirrhosis, kidney disease and a weakened immune system. Treatment involves intravenous antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue. Repeated operations may be needed, sometimes including amputation. Survivors may have severe scarring or limb loss. Even with treatment, up to 1 in 5 people die. |
