A myiasis is the parasitism of tissues and organs of vertebrates by larvae of flies . Although there are flies that specialize in this type of parasitism , as Dermatobia hominis , occurs accidentally in some species, such as by ingestion.
Myiasis can occur in many parts of the body: the digestive tract , vulva , inside the eyelid , injuries.

In some cases this infection has been beneficial and has even caused voluntarily in the treatment of wounds. The larvae of the green fly selectively eat rotting flesh wound preventing the gangrene progresses coming to avoid amputation .
Before the discovery of penicillin, this treatment was the only way to treat gangrene than amputation.
