Re: My Tonsils Removed, Very Painful

So do tell me, how much does that shit hurt? I have to get mine out in 18 days, my adenoids too.

Tell me ALL about it, did you have to spend a night in the hospital? All the details please.

Thanks.

Oh god, I feel bad for you.
It's the most painful experience I've EVER had.
I went to the hospital and checked in, and had to wait 4 hours for my doctor to be ready for me. I was scheduled to get them out at 10am, but I went in to surgery at 12:30. All I remember is them saying that I was about to pass out, and that when I woke up, I would be in recovery. The last thing I said was "oh crap!" then I woke up in recovery. My mom and dad were there, and they were feeding me ice chips from a cup because the nurse was afraid that if I tried to drink any juice or anything, I would vomit. My mom said the surgery itself took about 30 minutes. Since you're getting your adenoids out also, it'll probably be a little longer. I laid in the recovery bed for about 30 minutes until I was fully awake. They insisted that I be taken out in a wheelchair, so I got in and got wheeled to my car. I even had a starbuck's frappuccino. When I got home, my mom had me drinking water constantly (You're supposed to drink AT LEAST 3 quarts a day. Sounds easy, but it's not.)
For the rest of that day, I just laid in bed talking to my mom, and taking my pain medicine. They had me on liquid Lortab 7.5 every 4 hours. I didn't have too much pain, but my tongue was bruised and it hurt to talk, because of the clamps they use to hold it down during surgery. That will be a MAJOR pain. I remember that the first thing I said when I was conscious was "What happened to my tongue?!" But yeah, that was day one.
On the second day, I wasn't in a whole lot of pain, it just felt like a really obnoxious sore throat. My mom tried to get me to eat some chicken noodle soup, but that wasn't working AT ALL. I lounged around sipping water for the rest of that day. I thought it would be a breeze if that was the pain I was in on the 2nd day.
On the third day however, it kicked my ass.
I woke up at about 3am to take my Lortab. I couldn't talk, couldn't swallow, and could barely breathe. My nose got all stopped up from the Lortab, so I had to breathe out of my mouth, which dried my throat out, making it at LEAST 10 times more painful to swallow my medicine.
All day on the 3rd day was spend laying in bed going from crying to being pissed that I had to drink water in that condition. I was pretty mad that my doctor burned my uvula in the process, and it was swelled up to about the size of a thumb. But, that was only the beginning.
On the fourth day, I went through everything that happened on the 3rd day, only concerningly worse.
My throat felt like someone was in there cutting me with Razorblades every time I took a breath or swallowed. Oh, and that day, the ear pain started. It is referred pain from your throat. They should give you drops for it. It's like the WORST earache ever, and it doesn't stop. The drops really help though. You need to put them in every hour or so as soon as you start feeling pain. Then put half of a cotton ball in your ear to keep it from running or drying out. Trust me, that really helps. Now, my tongue started turning white, and I was extremely freaked out about that. My mom called the doctor, and he said that was completely normal, and that it should go away in a few days. My saliva was thick, and the back of my throat smelled HORRIBLE, leaving my mouth tasting bad. That's a really bad part of it, haha. The water wasn't working for me at all. I wasn't drinking my 3 quarts, and I couldn't even eat melted sherbet. I spent that day passing out, and taking my Lortab. The Lortab didn't really get rid of the pain, but it took the edge off.. sort of.
Okay, day 5.
That was the absolute WORST day. And I mean the WORST. I have an extremely high pain tolerance, and I spent the whole day in tears from this pain. I was begging my mother not to make me take the Lortab. Even though it was liquid, it burned going down, and it hurt even more to swallow. Because my uvula was still swollen, if I laid on my back, I could breathe in through my nose, but not out. If I tried to breathe out, it felt like my nose got plugged, because the uvula was in the way. Yeah, day 5 was hell.
Day 6, I woke up and had a new pain. The soreness I had before had disappeared, but my throat felt like it was ripping every time I tried to swallow or talk. I could have sworn that it had started to bleed, but it didn't. I figured out that since water hurt going down , AND it tasted horrible because of that lingering taste in my mouth, I would try something else. Gatorade REALLY makes a different. It masks that horrible taste, and if it's not icy cold, it doesn't shock your throat, and is somewhat bearable going down. That day was extremely horrible too, but I managed. Yesterday(Day seven) , it was SO much better. I still hadn't eaten anything except for some pudding from day two, but it didn't matter. If I even smelled food, I felt nauseous. I was upset because I was hungry but couldn't eat, but the pain wasn't bad .
It was like.. a bad sore throat, but it was nothing compared to days 3-6. I even took myself off of the Lortabs. I got my first full nights sleep, so I felt alot better.
Today is day 8 for me. I can drink without it hurting too too much, and I ate some cheesey tatertots from Sonic. my taste buds are completely fucked up still, so it didn't taste too good, but it was awesome to be able to eat! I went to the doctor for my follow-up appointment, and he said it was healing beautifully.
So here are some tips for you.
1. Drink as much water in the first two days as possible. Seriously. You won't want to drink for days 5-6, so get as much in as possible. Plus, it will keep you from being dehydrated.
2. Don't skip a dose on your medicine until day 6-7 or until you can drink without feeling like dying. Trust me. You may be feeling okay from the medicine, but once it wears off completely, it's nearly impossible to keep the pain under control.
3. Don't go into this thinking that you'll be back to hanging out with friends a few days later. You will need AT LEAST a week to recover. In some cases, two weeks.
4. Make sure to sleep with a humidifier if you can. It will help keep your throat moist, so it's not dry and cracking when you wake up. If you have a dry, cracked out throat when you wake up, it takes like an hour just to get to the point where you can drink water.
5. When you drink the water and are in great pain, sip it. SLOWLY. Don't try to chug it, because it will burn. Alot. I doubt you'd want to though, because just sipping feels like you're swallowing razor blades.
6. Do NOT try to eat anything until you can swallow without feeling like it's razor blades. I stuck with pudding, yogurt, raspberry sherbet, and popsicles.
7. If you have any products with dairy in them, it WILL make your saliva thick, sticky, and disgusting. I drank chocolate milk anyways, because it tasted good.
8. If you decide to brush your teeth, do NOT try to brush the white stuff forming on your tongue off. It will hurt extremely bad.
9. You will have HORRIBLE breath, and a horrible taste in your mouth. I spent 10 minutes brushing my teeth over and over, and still couldn't get rid of the taste or smell. My best advice is to chew a fruity gum. Not minty, because it will burn your throat. I chewed the "5 React" gum in the fruity flavor, and it helped alot with keeping the taste and smell at bay. Plus it keeps your saliva thin.
10. It will hurt too much to keep swallowing your saliva, so keep a trash can or cup near by at all times to spit in. Yeah, it's gross, but what can I say.
11. This WILL be the most painful thing you've ever experienced if you go through it like I did. My doctor said it would be worse than natural child birth, and although I haven't had a kid, this is horrible. I was in constant pain, and I'm still not up to my normal self. This one week is hell. Plain and simple.
12. Sleep is the enemy. Even if you have a humidifier, your throat will dry out, and that is the worst pain ever. I didn't do a good job with staying awake, but if I were you, and if you want to sleep, I would set an alarm to go off every 45 minutes. It should give you enough time to get a little nap, because you will pass out quick if they give you the right pain control. When the alarm goes off, get up and drink a glass or two of water. If you're still tired, repeat. My friend did that, and they said it really made a difference.

Hmm.. that's about it. Sorry I wrote so much, haha. I wish that someone had told me all of this before I got it done. I really regretted it during those horrible days, but I hope it helps.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I'm more than willing to help :)
And good luck. You're going to need it.

Re: My Tonsils Removed, Very Painful

OH! Also.
For day one and two, you might encounter a lot of hiccuping and burping. My doctor said that it was the anesthesia leaving my body. It sounded like b.s, but he's the doctor.
And, don't try yawning. I still can't. My doctor said it will hurt to yawn for about 4 weeks, because it's stretching the scar.
Sneezing hurts like crazy. If you feel a sneeze coming on, pinch your nose tight and hope it doesn't decide to come anyways.
Blowing your nose hurts if you do it too much. You can do it some times, but if you do it too hard or something, it feels like your throat hits the back of your nasal area REALLY hard, and it hurts. So, be cautious with that. Also, don't strain yourself to talk. You will only mumble quietly even though you think you're talking normal. My family couldn't even tell what I was saying when they were sitting right next to me. That's how bad it was. My voice didn't come back even a little bit until yesterday. It's still somewhat low now, but it's so much better.
Make sure not to sleep with a fan blowing on you. That will dry out your throat of course, and that's hella painful.
Okay, NOW I think that's it, haha.
Ask if you need anything else.(:

Ketchup was bad for you?
Hm, I had some ketchup with tater tots earlier. It wasn't too bad. It burned, but it wasn't horrible.

Re: My Tonsils Removed, Very Painful

Gross. They wanted to remove my son's tonsils and mine as well. They're not taking anything out of either of our bodies. And now, I am definitely glad neither of us had it. That's disgusting man1

Re: My Tonsils Removed, Very Painful

PS. Poor wiggs!! Having to know this is in store is awful! Um...wiggs, maybe you might wanna eat a bud of weed several times a day by sticking it in a blender and making an ice cream or sherbet smoothie, etc.... I hear weed is supposed to be really good for ppl in severe unrelenting pain.
