My Carpal Tunnel Operation..

Nothing too impressive or gory I'm afraid, just a carpal tunnel operation on my left hand a couple of years ago. The stitches were removed after a week and the scar is all but invisible now.

Just in case anybody is considering having this type of op done, it was very simple, and my hand was in full use within two weeks.

You can get keyhole surgery, supposedly far less hassle, but there is the risk of cutting a nerve.

It looks like a heart if you turn it to the right and the stitches goe well with your tattoo.

I have CPS. What is it they actually do during the surgery?

Re: My Carpal Tunnel Operation..

I've had that surgery too.
I watched the whole thing from first cut until the stitches. It was awesome!
(wasn't allowed to take pictures though )

Thanks guys, I was actually expecting a hammering for posting such a lame pic.

There is a ligament (or strap) that stretches across your hand, holding all the bones of your hand together. It forms the 'Carpal Tunnel' underneath itself, where all the tendons go through the bony gap to your fingers. It is pretty tight fit in there.

There is also a nerve that runs in there, the medial nerve. Sometimes you damage or stress the tendons, and they swell up, and can crimp off the nerve, causing the classic numb hand we all know and love.....

The tendons also scar a little every time you stress them, getting a bit fatter over time, which makes the whole thing worse.

During the operation they simply snip through that ligament giving more room for everything in there.

What is essential is that as soon as you are able to (same day as the op, I was advised) you need to start exercising your hand and wrist, or the ligament can simply grow back together and make it even worse. I still do it, with both hands, keep that strap thing stretched out.

I only had my left hand done, as I was terrified they'd cut the nerve and paralyse my hand. I need the right one done, but getting round to it is a bit awkward.

The one in the pic is actually horrible a cover up that turned into a right mess because the 'artist' would not do as requested.

Here's a couple of others I have though. You could call them 'human deformities' to keep on topic.
