Re: Mother of Mentally Ill Son's Story

That's what a social work told her.

My brother, who was not violent this time, but, was when he was younger, but, he had alcohol and drug issues and was in and out of rehabs.

I took him to a place with his bag packed and when I got home, he was back here.

He was too drunk for one place and too sober for another.

He drank himself to death the day after Thanksgiving, 2010. I remember him breaking a pool table when he was in his early 20's or so.

My last brother gave up from alcohol, drugs and depression the day after his birthday, in June, 2012.

My youngest brother died in a fire at 44, in 2009, with alcohol and drugs in his system. A cigarette or something smoldered and he asphyxiated.

All three had been in various rehabs.

I don't drink or do drugs. It's a horrible feeling to watch someone you love kill themselves and not be able to do anything about it.
I am so sorry about your brothers.

Re: Mother of Mentally Ill Son's Story

I am so sorry about your brothers.

Thank you, DoubleZ! I miss them terribly, especially the last one. He was my late night bad horror moving watching buddy :)

He lost a lot of friends in the past few years and my dad in 2008, got cut off of SSI because he never sent back the forms.

What I don't know is if the hospital tried to detox him too quickly since I know nothing about the process. He didn't have his cane with him when he went to the hospital and tried to used the bathroom and fell. Then, he wanted to go home so they restrained and sedated him.

I didn't think about when we visited him. We found him on his bedroom floor and he finally said he wanted to go to the hospital. He told his 3 kids he knew his system was shutting down.

He was up and talking for two days, then sedated, he was in and out of if, off and on a ventilator, had his Cpap machine some days.

Two days before his death, he was asking for food. His heart finally gave out. He was very much overweight, had an enlarged heart and liver, but, I guess all of the abuse on the body was too much that time.

I don't know how my mother deals with it. The house is like a shrine and she talks to the pictures. She is 77 and had a stroke in 2004.

The holidays are tough, but, I am thankful to have great nieces and a great nephew for the holidays! I love seeing their eyes get so big <3

Have a great holiday, if you celebrate and a happy and healthy New Year and thanks again

Not that I didn't enjoy the story but I was kind of hoping for pictures or something.

I doubt they want photos shown publicly. I'll check later.

Re: Mother of Mentally Ill Son's Story

That was very brave from the mother to tell such a personal and delicate story. A thought-provoking post. The loved ones of the mentally ill suffer as well, and lack of good and professional mental health services certainly isn't making the situation any better

Re: Mother of Mentally Ill Son's Story

I could only find pictures of the mother. She is a single mother of four, one being a special needs child.

No father, as I figured!
