More Elephantiasis
Elephantiasis is a disease that is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs, male genitals and female breasts. In some cases, the disease can cause certain body parts, such as the scrotum, to swell to the size of a softball or basketball. "Elephantitis" is a common mis-hearing or mis-remembering of the term, from confusing the ending -iasis (process or resulting condition) with the more commonly heard -itis (irritation or inflammation). Its proper medical name is lymphatic filariasis.

Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The lymphatic system (often referred to as the body's "second" circulatory system) collects and filters the interstitial fluid of the body. Lymphedema has been barely recognized as being a serious health problem; however, this is slowly changing due to education and awareness. The danger with lymphedema comes from the constant risk of developing an uncontrolled infection in the affected limb. Symptoms may include severe fatigue, a heavy swollen limb or localized fluid accumulation in other body areas, including the head or neck, discoloration of the skin overlying the lymphedema, and eventually deformity (elephantiasis). Elephantiasis is just a type of lymphedema. It is caused when adult tissue roundworms (Wucheria sp.) obstruct your lymphatics, thus leading to the accumulation of fluid. Travelers to areas where elephantiasis is endemic need not be worried as only chronic infection to this parasite leads to elephantiasis. Another type of lymphedema occurs after a mastectomy (the surgery a woman receives to remove cancerous breast tissue). Because the surgeons often remove the draining lymphatics, the woman suffers from lymphedema. However, in this case, it isn't roundworms obstruction the lymphatics but simply the removal of the lymphatics.
