The mole had been there for years. Then about 3 months ago it started growing larger and asymmetrical, it also became tender, and being on my back it was rubbed a lot. I was hoping it would return to normal, it didn't, and I waited about 40 days too long in getting it checked.

I agree with Kellyhound. That really is a lot of surrounding tissue they removed with it. I had one removed on my back years ago. It looks like an eye, cos of the stitches marking around it looking like eyelashes. Mine was just sinister looking, though, it came back clear. Hope it all stays gone for you.
