Re: Missing Thumb Replaced with Toe

I think I agree. I found pt items that indicate the big toe absorbs about 40% of the force of all activities involving the foot. An article about amputation and transfer stated:

Great toe amputation affects foot bone stress. Barca et al. found that patients who received micro-surgical reconstruction of the thumb with great toe transfer exhibited an overload of central and lateral metatarsal bones. Thus, great toe amputation significantly altered the weight distribution pattern within the foot. This alteration would inevitably affect a subject’s balance.

I'll upload the full article.

In that case they should have used his big toe.

I definitely wouldn't want to affect my mobility/balance. I'll definitely stay thumb less.

Re: Missing Thumb Replaced with Toe

Microsurgeons are very good at what they do, but in a way they are sadists.
When I had a hand injury the surgeon was overly enthusiastic about not only amputating my middle finger, but cutting out the adjoining metacarpal bone inside the hand, then binding the remaning fingers together and sowing it up, so i would only have three fingers.
upon expressing apprehension, he tried to console me by saying "no one ever really counts your fingers."
i just couldn'y believe how anxious he was to try it. microsurgeons experiment on people and theyre willing to try anything atleast once.
