Miscarriage Photos: Four Pregnancy Losses, Two in the Second Trimester
Miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy. In U.S. medical usage, it occurs before the 20th week; British usage applies the term to losses before 24 weeks. Most miscarriages happen during the first 7 weeks, making second-trimester losses a minority. Chromosome problems that prevent normal development cause many miscarriages. Other possible causes include clotting or hormone disorders, infections, uterine problems, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking and alcohol or drug use, although the cause often remains unknown. About 10% to 25% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. |
