Our client, who lost about one-half of his right hand in a mine accident has returned to work full time. Thanks to a UCAT and orthotist collaboration, a custom, functional stump-protection system was developed that allows this client to do his strenuous job duties as before.

After the injury and subsequent surgeries, the hand was extremely sensitive to touch and temperature. The protective orthotic is made of carbon-fiber shell connected by a stainless hinge at the wrist. The other photo shows an adapted mitten that covers the entire hand with orthotic.
A powerful element in this story is that this man had lived homeless for much of his life. Finally after a long rehabilitation process, he injured his hand just weeks after starting work as a mine worker.

Amazing what surgeons can do! We see he can dial a phone. I wonder if he can punch better with that. He wouldn't have to worry about breaking fingers.
