Because with a wound like that if it is covered the infection will continue. Also he would need a skin graft to cover the area because there isn't enough skin to suture it shut.

With this op it has to heal from the inside out. Like Nephilim said, there isnt enough skin to stitch it up. Its not actualy left like that all day. i have to shower about 15 minutes before the nurse comes to pack it with silver dressing and puts a giant plaster on top. If it wasnt packed the skin would grow over leaving a sort of pocket which would have continued infections. Off to wash my giant crack......  |
