A woman's ear turned black after she was bitten by a poisonous spider.

The unnamed Dutch woman, 22 was on holiday in Italy when she was bitten on her left ear by a Mediterranean reaper spider.

The spider's venom caused her ear to turn black and liquify meaning the cells were attacked and died.



Plastic surgeon Marieke van Wijk had to cut away the infected part of her ear where the skin and cartilage cells were dead.

The Netherlands surgeon was able to rebuild her ear using cartilage from her ribs.


She said that usually the spiders were "not that dangerous" and that she wouldn't panic and take undue precautions to avoid a bite.

Reaper spiders also known as fiddle-back, violin spiders or recluse spiders, are a genus of venemous spiders renowed for their bite which produces symptoms called loxoscelism.

Loxoscelism is a cause of arachnogenic necrosis, meaning the human cells being killed by a spider bite.

Friend of mine woke with a weird mark on his thigh and it was swollen. He felt quite ill and went to the doctor as was put on meds. Doctor said it was a spider bite I live in the UK.

The doc did a good job of reconstructing the ear, though. You almost can't tell there was ever a problem.
