Mature Cystic Teratoma: Dermoid Cyst With Hair and Teeth
A mature cystic teratoma, also called a dermoid cyst, is a usually benign germ cell tumor containing fully developed tissues from all three embryonic germ layers. Its cavity commonly contains oily material called sebum, keratin and hair. It can also contain fat, bone, cartilage and teeth. About one in three contains teeth. Mature cystic teratoma is the most common ovarian germ cell tumor in young women. Treatment usually involves laparoscopic removal of the cyst while preserving the ovary. Complications can include ovarian twisting, rupture and recurrence after removal. Malignant transformation occurs in 0.5 to 3% of cases. |

Re: Mature Cystic Teratoma: Dermoid Cyst With Hair and Teeth
wow very interesting! From the contents of the dermoid cyst i'd say that this was present since birth; instead of being developed post natal. Apparently these cyst contain a kind of embryonic stem cell (multipotent cells) which would have normally developed into the different layers of the body and eventually skin hair bones etc. |
