They did spell it "phenyl" but I think they meant "phenol"- which is like, basically a generic floor cleaner. But, I imagine it hurts your stomach something fierce. And I hate vomiting and I definitely hate vomiting around other people. Sounds like the most painful thing to do in the world. I do think these people are mentally ill but I don't think they deserve to die...

Lots of confusion here, but it's easy to be in this situation.

Phenol (aka Carbolic Acid) is a chemical (which confusingly contains a Phenyl group).

"Phenyl" in this case isn't a chemical but is used as a term for formulas (commonly used as disinfectants) that contain Phenol.

It's pretty clear they're not drinking pure Phenol or they'd all be dead, but are in fact drinking some kind of floor cleaner.

The original article is likely correctly calling it "phenyl", which is very toxic but not super fatal especially in the "pretend to take a swig and then start freaking out and acting like you're dying" type doses like they're doing in this video.
