19 April 2023, Segamat, Malaysia- A man decided to commit suicide after he doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire at a petrol station in Jalan Ibrahim here two days ago.

According to Segamat District Police Chief, Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah, his side has received a police report stating that a man had poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire.

"The victim is a 24-year-old Chinese man who used a lighter after pouring petrol on himself at pump 3, the gas station at 8pm on April 17.

"The owner of the gas station premises managed to put out the fire and save the victim by using a fire extinguisher. However, the victim then ran towards Kilometer 185 Jalan Seremban - Johor Bahru and tried to commit suicide again by sitting in the middle of the road," he said in a statement.

Ahmad Zamry said, the lorry driver who was passing through the road managed to stop his vehicle when he saw a glimpse of people in the middle of the road.

He added that unfortunately a proton hero car from the back of the lorry failed to control its vehicle and hit the back of the lorry causing a road accident.

"The victim with 70 percent burns all over his body was sent to the hospital.

Segamat used an ambulance to get treatment and the victim's initial testimony was obtained that the cause of the suicide attempt was because the victim had failed to pass the bachelor of law exam for the third time.

"The victim felt ashamed among his family members and decided to commit suicide. However, the police are still continuing further investigations to identify the validity of the information," he explained.

The police have opened an investigation paper under section 309 of the penal code, if convicted can be imprisoned for a period of up to (1) year or with a fine or with both.

Many Asian and especially Chinese families are very strict when it comes to schooling their children. If the kid fails to succeed, it is considered an enormous loss of face. Especially in a case like this when the person was studying something as prestigious as law. It is unfortunate that he saw no other way out than attempting to take his own life
