Man With A 15-Inch Tail is Worshiped As a God
Chandre Oraon, a 35-year old Indian man from Alipurduar, West Bengal is revered for his lengthy 14.5 inch tail, which kind of looks like a dreadlock hanging from his backside! Local villagers believe Oraon is the reincarnation of the Hindu deity Hanuman, or the monkey god who makes all wishes come true. Those who believe in Hanuman travel from far and wide to touch Oraon’s tail and receive a blessing, hoping it will cure their ailments and bring them good fortune. The fact that, as a tea-picker, Oraon climbs trees regularly and skillfully certainly lends itself to the Hanuman theory: Oraon’s tail stems from a birth condition known as spina bifida. This occurs when some vertebrae do not fully form, leaving an opening towards the bottom of the spinal cord. One symptom of spina bifida, as in Oraon’s case, is the growth of a small tuft of hair, which, over time, can become a hardened “tail.” Doctors have offered to remove his tail, but Oraon declines. After falling deathly ill after his mother chopped off his tail as a youngster, Oraon believes he is meant to keep it. Although Oraon and his family graciously accept his tail as a divine gift, the not everyone in his community agrees. In school, Oraon was bullied for having a tail. As an adult, 20 women rejected his marriage proposals before his current wife accepted, and even she is no fan of his “blessing.” Still, Oraon has devoted followers and chooses to keep his tail, believing in his divine purpose. He hopes to one day be able to build a large temple where hundreds can gather to receive blessings. |
