Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MRI of the knee provides detailed images of structures within the knee joint, including bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles and blood vessels, from many angles.

The examination is typically performed to diagnose or evaluate knee pain, swelling or bleeding in the tissues in and around the joint, damaged cartilage, damaged meniscus, damaged ligaments or tendons, sports-related knee injuries, bone fractures that may not be visible on x-rays and other imaging test, degenerative joint disorders such as arthritis,build-up of fluid in the knee joint, infections (such as osteomyelitis), tumors (primary tumors and metastases) involving bones and joints, or decreased motion of the knee joint.

Re: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

great invention.
had a few myself.

MRI is based on a physics phenomenon discovered in the 1930s, called nuclear magnetic resonance or NMR, in which magnetic fields and radio waves cause atoms to give off tiny radio signals. Felix Bloch, working at Stanford University, and Edward Purcell, from Harvard University, discovered NMR. NMR spectroscopy was then used as means to study the composition of chemical compounds.

History of MRI - Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield
The 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Paul C Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield for their discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging.
Paul Lauterbur, a Professor of Chemistry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook wrote a paper on a new imaging technique which he termed zeugmatography (from the Greek zeugmo meaning yoke or a joining together). Lauterbur imaging experiments moved science from the single dimension of NMR spectroscopy to the second dimension of spatial orientation - the foundation of MRI.

Peter Mansfield of Nottingham, England, further developed the utilization of gradients in the magnetic field. He showed how the signals could be mathematically analyzed, which made it possible to develop a useful imaging technique. Peter Mansfield also showed how extremely fast imaging could be achievable. This became technically possible within medicine a decade later.

Re: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Here's an after view, they had to take out the titanium plate and screws most people just keep the rest of their lives and fill the areas in with bone putty, as my body was the one in a million that rejected the titanium. You can see the fusion solid at C6-C7, with bulges all over the place above that hurt like hell and give me Nasty Migraines!

What exactly happened to your neck? Was it broken or severe whiplash or ???
