Lower Lip Avulsion: Cat Degloving Injury, Degloved Chin and Surgical Repair
Lower lip avulsion is a traumatic injury in which the lip and chin soft tissue are stripped away from the lower jaw. It occurs primarily in dogs and cats. In a veterinary series, lower-lip injuries were the most common pattern in cats, while upper-lip injuries were more common in dogs. Surgical treatment involves cleaning the wound, removing damaged tissue and securing the lip with absorbable sutures. Repair commonly uses sutures placed around the teeth; in very young animals, incompletely developed teeth can make this harder, and sutures through the jawbone may be used instead. Wound reopening was the most common short-term complication in the series, but surgical repair was highly successful, with no significant long-term complications. |
