not leprosy. leprosy doesn't cause skin to fall off, it causes the nerves to die and the hands and feet become deformed from repeated injuries since the patient can't tell they're fracturing bone...

Exactly. In the Middle Ages they thought leprosy made people's fingers and toes fall off. Then it was eventually discovered that they were not falling off; they were being eaten off by rats in the middle of the night, and the patients couldn't feel it because of the nerve damage. Yum.
