Re: Lobotomy
Walter Freeman was apparently trying to make a name for himself through this procedure. He performed over 3500 lobotomies (the ice-pick method) before he was stripped of hospital privileges after a patient died of a brain hemorrhage. Thorazine came into play in the 50's which put a kibbosh on the demand for lobotomies. It was actually advertised as a "lobotomy in a bottle". Lobotomies were actually recommended to housewives who felt unfulfilled (brings to mind The Stepford Wives), and for children who "misbehaved". The youngest patient to undergo this procedure was FOUR years old! I was watching vids about him on YT last night. Here's a good one: [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0aNILW6ILk"]YouTube- Lobotomy - PBS documentary, on Walter Freeman[/nomedia] |
