Lamellar Ichthyosis Images and Other Congenital Ichthyosis Pictures
Lamellar ichthyosis is an inherited skin disorder in which large, dark, plate-like scales cover most of the body. Affected babies are typically born covered by a clear, tight membrane called a collodion membrane. It peels away during the first few weeks, revealing scaly skin; the eyelids and lips may turn outward. The condition follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. Changes in the TGM1 gene account for about 90% of cases. Lamellar ichthyosis affects about 1 in 100,000 people in the United States. Infants can develop infection, dehydration and breathing problems. Other features include hair loss, nail abnormalities, thickened palms and soles, and reduced sweating that increases sensitivity to heat. |
